Edge functions: where they pay off

A clear-eyed guide to latency, deployment and the limits of the edge.

// The short version

A decision framework you can use

Good engineering writing should help a team make its next decision. The ideas below are intentionally practical: start from constraints, make trade-offs explicit and leave a system that can be observed.

// In practice

The details that matter

01

Latency is only one variable

Edge execution can reduce distance to users, but it also changes runtime APIs, connection patterns and observability. Measure the full request path before moving code closer to the edge.

02

Good edge candidates

Personalization, lightweight redirects, request shaping and latency-sensitive reads are often strong candidates. Long-running jobs, heavy dependencies and stateful workflows usually belong elsewhere.

03

Design for the fallback

The best edge architecture has a clear regional or origin fallback. Treat placement as an optimization, not a dependency that makes the product fragile.
